Design Highlight #1:
Students For Consent Culture | SFCC
February 2021
Ms. Ashley was responsible for overseeing the completion of several deliverables, including the visual design and production of two reports: Crucial Voices: Report on SFCC Student Consultations for the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence (2020–21) [EN | FR] and Canada’s National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence: 10 Priorities for Post-Secondary Education [EN | FR].

During her time working with SFCC, Ms. Grenstone developed a cohesive visual theme that unified the various reports and visual materials produced for the organization. She also created custom illustrations and data visualizations to clearly communicate key findings, making complex information more engaging and accessible to readers.
Design Highlight #2:
‘To Be Continued: Troubling the Queer Archive‘
September 24, 2020 – May 15, 2021
Curators: Cara Tierney and Anna Shah Hoque | Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG), Ottawa, ON, Canada
From the Gallery Archives: “The story of queer history that dominates the archival record is one of white cisnormative gays. Curators Anna Shah Hoque and Cara Tierney question and destabilize this incomplete version of the past, foregrounding the work and creativity of emerging and established artists from local queer, trans and IBPOC communities.“

Ms Grenstone’s contribution to the group exhibition was entitled Transphoria and can best be described as a chaotic installation which featured a desk, chair, and wall that captured the messy, iterative process of writing and designing a book from cover to cover.
Viewers were invited to linger on rough drafts, sift through scattered notes, and read the margin comments exchanged between Ashley and her editor — offering a glimpse into the raw, unfiltered process behind the polished final work. The installation sought to honor the vulnerability and creativity inherent in artistic development, transforming the act of editing into a visual experience that also echoed the process of transition itself — a reflection on growth, revision, and self-formation as a queer, trans artist.
Design Highlight #3:
YMCA Informational Plaques
May 2019
As an employee Ms Ashley voluntarily designed and produced informational plaques which displayed in acrylic standees and positioned at the entrances of Ottawa YMCA community centres. These plaques were created to help members easily identify which desks were open or closed for use, while also sharing key information such as Wi-Fi access details and highlights of current YMCA programs and services. The designs balanced clarity with visual appeal, ensuring that the information was easy to read, accessible, and consistent with the YMCA’s welcoming brand identity.

Design Highlight #4:
2nd Year Final Design Project
March 2011
In 2011, while in her second year of the Visual and Product Design program at NSCAD University, Ashley completed her final project focused on designing a functional bicycle storage solution for urban environments. The project, reviewed by City of Halifax staff, resulted in the Portable Urban Bicycle Storage Unit (PUBS Unit) — a concept that incorporated shipping containers and recycled materials to reflect a theme of maritime renewal and sustainable urban design.

The PUBS Unit was designed with durability, Sustainability, and community use in mind. Its modular structure allowed for easy transportation, installation and customization. By combining practical urban design with creative problem-solving, Ashley’s project reflected her early interests in design solutions that are both environmentally conscious and socially responsive.
From Artistic Vision To Professional Product
